For many people, the idea of eating with dentures for the first time might seem daunting. While natural teeth are integrated into your bones, dentures are placed on top of your gum tissue and stay in place with an adhesive. Rest assured knowing that if you can cut it with a fork, you can chew it with your new dentures. These tips will help you to get used to eating while wearing dentures the first time.
During your first time eating with dentures, start slowly. If you just had your teeth removed and got an immediate denture, your dentist might recommend a liquid or soft diet for your first meal. Avoid holding the liquids in your mouth for too long. The liquids could dissolve some of the denture adhesive. Some nutritious liquid and soft foods to try for your meal with dentures the first time include:
Warm tomato soup
Smooth yogurt or pudding
Mashed potatoes thinned with extra milk
Cut Food Into Small Pieces
When you are ready to eat with your dentures the first time, be sure to cut tough or raw foods into small pieces. For raw vegetables and fruits such as carrots and apples, cut them into thin slices. Cucumbers, pears and semi-hard foods could be cut into small cubes. This is called a mechanical soft diet, and it refers to making foods easier to chew. Cutting the food into small pieces allows you to ease into your regular diet.
Distribute Food Evenly While Chewing
It is also important to distribute your food evenly in your mouth while chewing. This is a good idea for digestion as well. Take small bites, and chew with both sides of your mouth. Instead of biting into a food directly, such as chicken on a drumstick or corn on the cob, cut it off. Eat the food from your fork or spoon instead. The utensils make it easier to distribute the food in your mouth. They also make it easier to take a smaller bite.
Chew Slowly and Thoroughly
If you often eat quickly or barely chew your food, you will need to change those habits. Take your time while chewing your food with dentures. Chew each bite slowly and thoroughly. Have a Beverage Nearby

The water will help to wash the food off of the dentures. Very hard, sticky, stringy and food with particles in it could also benefit from having water nearby. Keep some water handy when eating food such as peanut butter, seeded berries, celery, coconut, tapioca pudding and crusty bread. You can still eat the food you enjoy the most!
